Zapatista Woman

The community of San Andrés Sacamch´en, in Chiapas, is very far from any big cities. It is also very far from ideas of equality and equity. Ramona first noticed this when she turned 13 and her father told her that soon she’d have to think about marriage, even if she didn’t like the idea of it. She also noticed this when her cousin José Maria died of diarrhea up in the mountains without a doctor to give him medicine, or when she wanted to continue with her studies but was not able to.

Ramona’s convictions led her to take up arms. She became a commander of the EZLN (Zapatista Army of National Liberation).
