Marisol has osteogenesis imperfecta, a rare genetic disorder characterized by fragile bones that fracture easily. This disease is also known as having “Glass Bones.”
The sickness is caused by a genetic defect that affects the production of the protein collagen in the body. The disease can sometimes be mitigated and only leads to a few fractures across the life span of the patient. In the most serious cases, the disease can cause hundreds of fractures without any evident reason.
Marisol and Rocío were friends, but one day Rocío disappeared on her way home from high school. All of Rocío’s neighbors organized in her name to go protest for justice in front of the government offices. Yolanda, Marisol’s mother, forbids Marisol from going because of a recently fractured fibula. Marisol didn’t obey because, although her leg was broken, her voice could still be heard. She asked her brother to take her in a wheelchair to the protest, because Rocío is worth that and so much more.
My legs can be broken but not my voice.
