Black Lives Matter

Tanisha works night shifts. She’s a single mother and her son Demond is finishing high school. He will be the first in his family to graduate, and it’s likely that he’ll be able to go to university, though his neighbor, Mary Jane, thinks Demond is a drug addict because he’s friends with Malik. Mary Jane is seventy years old and thinks that all black people are the same. She doesn’t even look his way when he goes out to take out the trash.

One day, Demond offered to help Mary Jane carry her things to her house, but she began to scream at him. A police officer, without asking what was wrong, put Demond in a cop car and took him away.

Tanisha went to Mary Jane’s house and explained to her that Demond was her son and that he got good grades. She even showed her a photo of him with his diploma. She asked Mary Jane to help get Demond out of jail because no one believed that he was a good boy. Mary Jane was silent and shut the door on Tanisha.

The next day Mary Jane accompanied Tanisha to the police station.

Demond succeeded in getting into university.
